Oval Steel
The Oval Steel roof rack is manufactured using oval steel tubing for superior strength and reduced wind resistance. The racks are completely manufactured in Australia for Australian conditions and built to specifications suitable for individual vehicle makes and models and we use our individually designed mounting systems to provide the strength required for carrying heavy loads, and to withstand the demands of outback touring.
Our advanced welding process ensures a superior finish and strength. The racks are zinc plated to increase corrosion resistance. They’re lighter than most steel racks and stronger than alloy.
Available in a number of different styles including basket with four sides, open ends with two sides, flat deck with no sides, tent with three sides at the front and no sides at the rear or canopy.
Our Oval Steel range of roof racks are proudly Australian made and can be fitted at our Bayswater and Minchinbury branches, or they can be shipped to your location in Australia.

DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING
The Oval Steel rack was developed in the early 2000s and has proved to be an enduring icon of the Australian Outdoors. Fully Customizable, it allows those who want an entirely fabricated roof rack the opportunity to build a rack to suit their exact requirements. Whether you require open ends, Closed ends, tent style, flat deck or even upside down, the oval steel roof rack is perfect!
COMPONENTS
An Oval Steel rack includes:
- Oval tube 31mm x 17.8mm.
- Stainless steel hardware.
- A durable, zinc electroplated and powder-coated frame.
- Crossbars are 19mm square ERW tubes with a 1.6mm wall thickness.
- Mounting channels are 40mm x 22mm, 10mm bolt compatible

Zinc Electroplating
Zinc Electroplating is a process commonly used in the automotive industry to protect steel from elements that would cause it to rust. Zinc plating is performed by dipping the product, in this case, your Oval steel roof rack, in a series of immersion tanks where a thin zinc coating approximately 8 microns thick attaches to the steel. The coating acts as a sacrificial coating so that if the top powder-coated layer of paint is chipped or damaged, the zinc will protect the steel underneath from the elements. All Mild steel components in the complete Wedgetail rack range are zinc electroplated before powder coating.

MOUNTING LUGS
The mounting lugs are used to attach to mounting points built into the sub-structure of the vehicle roof. Once the fixing lugs are installed the mounting rails are bolted to the lugs. The lugs are designed for individual models of vehicle and a variety of fixing devices are used for the lugs. Most vehicles with factory fitted rails will have bolt in points so they are used.
If bolt in points are not available we will drill through to the sub-structure of the roof and use stainless steel rivets to fix the tabs. All holes are then water proofed using a commercial grade silicon sealant.
MOUNTING RAILS
The mounting rails are custom-designed for each vehicle so that the weight of the platform and load is evenly spread over the vehicle’s roof. They are laser cut from 3 mm steel, zinc electroplated, and powder coated with a matt black finish. The mounting rails for all utes and wagons are a single piece, and for vans, they are often two pieces per side.
