With so many different ways to mount a roof rack to a vehicle these days, it’s no surprise that we often hear the same question: “I’ve got factory rails on my car – can I mount a Wedgetail rack to them?”
The short answer is: yes, you can! But, there are a few things to consider to make sure you’re getting the safest, strongest, and most reliable setup.
Vehicles We Commonly Fit with Factory Rail Roof Racks
We regularly fit Wedgetail roof racks to vehicles with factory rails, including:
-
Ford Everest
-
Land Rover Defender 110
-
Isuzu MU-X
-
Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
-
Volkswagen Amarok
-
Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series
If your vehicle isn’t listed, don’t worry – give us a call, and we’ll help you find the perfect fit.
Clamp-On vs. Rail Mount Systems
For vehicles fitted with factory rails, there are typically two mounting options available:
1. Clamp-On Mounting Systems
Clamp-style systems attach a roof rack directly to your factory rails using brackets or clamps. While it’s a quick solution, it does come with some limitations.
-
The Weak Link? The Factory Rail.
Most factory rails are designed for aesthetics or light-duty accessories – not for heavy loads or rough conditions. Once you account for the weight of your rack, you’re often left with only 20–40kg of usable payload. -
Best for Light Loads Only
Clamp-on systems are okay for basic use, but they’re not recommended if you’re planning on mounting a rooftop tent, carrying gear for extended off-road trips, or hauling heavy trade equipment.
2. Wedgetail’s Rail Mount Systems – A Better Solution
At Wedgetail, we recommend a custom-fitted rail mount system wherever possible. Here’s why:
-
Built for Strength
Our rail systems transfer the weight load directly into the vehicle’s structural mounting points – like the roof channel or gutter – rather than relying on the strength of a factory rail. That means a higher payload capacity and a safer ride, even in tough terrain. -
Designed for Your Vehicle
Every rail mount we fabricate is custom-made in Australia to suit your vehicle’s roof profile. This ensures an exact fit and a clean finish—no generic clamp kits here. -
Sleek, Low-Profile Look
Our rail systems sit lower and integrate more naturally into your vehicle’s design, offering a professional, clean look that performs as good as it looks.
When a Clamp-On is the Only Option
In some cases, such as with certain Land Rover or European SUV models, a clamp-on system may be the only viable option due to the vehicle’s roof design. In these cases, we still ensure the safest possible fit using high-quality, corrosion-resistant hardware and engineering-grade brackets. But when we can install a rail mount, it’s always our first recommendation.
